Garlic Presses -
Why Your Kitchen Needs One

The garlic press is a must have household item for anyone who likes to cook. They are relatively inexpensive and are a great time saving tool in the kitchen. Sure, you can by that powdered garlic, but it's just not as good. If you're good with a knife, you can slice, smash or chop garlic into tiny pieces. But if you really want to make it easy, get a garlic press.

Garlic presses allow you to easily mince fresh garlic almost instantaneously. You simply place a clove of garlic in the cylinder within the press, and apply pressure by squeezing the two handles together. The garlic is then forced through small holes at the base of the cylinder.

You can press some fresh garlic over your sauce pan while you sauté. You might even want to put some fresh minced garlic over a salad, in some soup, or in some humus. There are many times when a garlic press may come in handy.

Unfortunately, there are not many other items that can effectively be used in a garlic press. Most garlic presses are just large enough to accommodate small and medium sized garlic cloves. If you plan on mincing large quantities of other items, you might want to consider purchasing a food processor. However, since garlic is effective in small doses, a garlic press is all you need when you plan to include garlic in your meal.

Garlic presses can be easily be cleaned. Most are made of metal and are dishwasher safe. If you do not have a dishwasher, we recommend soaking the garlic press in some soapy water soon after it is used. Garlic tends to leave unwanted odors in your press if it is not cleaned right away.

When looking for a garlic press, try to avoid ones that are made of plastic or do not have very good leverage. You'll need good leverage to 'press' the garlic. For pennies more, you can have a kitchen item that will last for life, and make mincing garlic seem effortless.
